Hence the tree’s “upside down” look, with its large, swollen trunk and gnarled branches that resemble enormous roots. The baobab is an emblematic tree of sub-Saharan Africa and, like the shea tree, is known as the "tree of life.” It stands out for its enormous size, and incredible lifespan which some claim can be up to 2,000 years.
