Commonly known as rose geranium or sweet scented geranium, pelargonium graveolens is believed to have been imported from the Cape of Good Hope circa 1690 by sailors captivated by its powerful rose scent. In the 19th century, perfumers hoping to replace the increasingly rare and expensive damask rose were also attracted to its heady fragrance, and geranium soon became a must-have in the field of perfumery.
