<p><strong>The woman</strong><br />A nurse for 26 years in the Eastern Cape, Dinah arrived in Pretoria in December 2001 with her husband and four children. She lasted just two months as a housewife before setting out to see where her help was needed. She chose Nellmapius, a dusty, sprawling settlement on the outskirts of the city. First, she knocked on each door, assessing each household and finding out what they needed most.</p><p><strong>Her fight: « Women for Change »</strong><br />The foundation provides support and advice for Grannies and a place where children can play safely in the morning and have something to eat. And on a Thursday, a social worker is here to help them sign up for childcare grants. This is of key importance, since many of the Grannies are illiterate, and without the grants, the children have nothing.</p><p><strong>What about now?</strong><br />Dinah plans to expand the aftercare, soup kitchen and morning sessions to every day of the week.</p>
