The woman
Gina Graichen is a chief of police in Berlin, the only city in Germany that has a separate branch devoted to child abuse and neglect. The team works tirelessly to protect children from their own parents, and for 21 years, Gina has been dealing with people who mistreat their children. She describes them as individuals who can solve their problems only through brute force. Parents who use violence to raise their children. Young parents, mothers left in the lurch by fathers; people who are completely overwhelmed or did not even want their children; and those who thought children were as easy to care for as dolls.

Her fight: « Crimes against Wards »
Her personal goal is to raise awareness of the issue and encourage neighbours to take action and not to turn a blind eye. She designed and launched a poster campaign, that showed pictures of stone angels at the children's cemetery, cradling a pink toy mouse in their arms. The posters were placed in trams, public buildings and appeared as advertising inserts in newspapers. Next to her home phone, Gina Graichen has installed an emergency phone where someone can be reached 24 hours a day.

What about now?
Even after 20 years of service, this mother of two is still shocked when confronted with the extent of human cruelty and the neglect children suffer.
